JumpstartMD Review: Price, Pros & Cons

JumpstartMD is a medical weight-loss practice with 14 clinics in California, from the Bay Area down to Irvine, and online visits for people who can't get to one. It has been running for about 18 years. Its founder and chief medical officer is Dr. Sean Bourke, and its physicians include Stanford-trained doctors and diplomates of the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

That shapes everything about the program. JumpstartMD suggests a visit with a clinician or health coach every week, in person or online. Those check-ins are where your dose is adjusted, your labs are reviewed and your progress is tracked, including InBody body-composition scans at the clinics.

JumpstartMD lists weight-loss membership at $99 a month online or $199 in clinic. Medication is not included, and its current product pages do not publish ongoing drug prices. A limited-time enrollment offer is $79, down from $379; ask what that fee covers and what your medication will cost.

The program runs on a monthly membership, with different levels depending on how often you visit. Medication, when it's prescribed, is a separate cost. Ask for both numbers, in writing, before you enroll.

JumpstartMD's clinicians prescribe brand-name GLP-1s such as Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro, plus older weight-loss drugs like phentermine, metformin and naltrexone-bupropion. They also offer plans with no medication at all if your evaluation points that way.

Compounded medication is an option too, when a provider decides it's appropriate and you consent. JumpstartMD names its compounding partner, PerfectRx. The pharmacy ships the medication to you, JumpstartMD bills you for it, and pharmacy questions go through JumpstartMD rather than the pharmacy itself.

JumpstartMD is cash pay up front, but some costs may be reimbursable. If you have a PPO plan with out-of-network benefits, its claims team will submit claims for you. To qualify, you need to have paid your monthly membership and attended at least two weekly visits that month. HMO and Medicare plans don't cover it. Some program costs can also be paid with an HSA or FSA card.

• Check how often you'll need to come in. Weekly visits are the model. Ask what's expected if you're online only.
• Ask how to cancel. JumpstartMD doesn't publish a cancellation or refund policy.
• Location matters. In-person care is California only.
